Charitable Gift Annuity

The Gift that Gives Back to You

Did you know there is a way to receive income and support the University of Michigan? It's called a charitable gift annuity, a simple contract between you and U-M where you make a gift and we agree to provide payments to you, or up to two beneficiaries, for life.

The payment rate is fixed at the time of funding, which means the payment amount never changes regardless of what the economy does. After your lifetime the balance of the annuity is used by U-M to support an area of your choosing.

A gift annuity offers many benefits, but the benefits increase when you fund it with an appreciated asset like stock. By transferring stock to U-M you can receive immediate capital gains relief for your gift. Avoiding an immediate capital gains tax on the sale of your assets can provide a big benefit for you if you are facing higher capital gains tax rates this year. If you are age 50 or older you are eligible to establish and start receiving payments. You can fund a charitable gift annuity with a minimum of $10,000 in cash or appreciated securities.

A charitable gift annuity may provide:

  • Supplemental retirement income
  • Fixed payments for you and/or a loved one for life
  • Capital gains tax savings (for an appreciated asset gift)
  • Higher payments for a deferred payment gift annuity

Please call or email us for a free no obligation illustration with your potential gift annuity payment and tax benefits.
