Charitable Remainder Unitrust

How Much Is Too Much Inheritance?

When you want to help your heirs, and leave a charitable legacy, a charitable remainder trust offers the best of both worlds.

You have worked hard and been fortunate enough to accumulate a substantial estate. You love your family and want to leave them enough to provide for their needs and maybe even their desires. But you also want give back by making a charitable gift that will have a lasting impact at the University of Michigan. Do you wonder whether a lump sum inheritance may be too much for your heirs to manage all at once? Are you asking yourself what is the appropriate amount of inheritance to give them while meeting your philanthropic goals?

Consider a measured plan that helps to ensure heirs are well cared for and that their inheritance lasts. One of the best ideas is to establish a charitable remainder unitrust and direct your trustee to make payments to your heirs over life or a number of years, rather than giving them their inheritance all at once. Commonly known as a CRUT, a unitrust works much like a charitable gift annuity. However, a CRUT offers you more flexibility in the assets that can be used, investment options, and how the payments (distributions) are made.

A charitable remainder unitrust trust offers these benefits:

  • Receive variable payments that may hedge against inflation
  • Income payments can be made to several beneficiaries
  • Avoid capital gains tax with the gift of appreciated assets
  • Remove assets from your taxable estate
  • Receive an income tax deduction immediately for part of the funding amount
  • Additional gifts can be made to the trust at any time
  • A substantial gift to Michigan after payments are made to your family
